Description

Chapter Twenty-nine is called “The Ten Patiences.” SamÁdhi is needed to attain spiritual powers. In addition, you must be patient if you wish to attain them; and patience is very difficult. The Chinese character for patience is a picture of a knife blade above the heart. In other words, being patient can be as painful as when one’s heart is pierced with a knife, and such pain is hard to bear. Nevertheless, one must bear what is impossible to bear. If Bodhisattvas can perfect these ten kinds of patience, they will attain the positions of unobstructed patience of all Bodhisattvas.

    Earth Store Sutra $9.00

Although virtually unknown in the West, the Sutra of the Past Vows of Earth Store Bodhisattva has been popularly used for centuries in East Asia in the rituals concerned with death and dying. The Earth Store Sutra records various previous lives of Earth Store (Ksitigarbha) Bodhisattva in which he made vows. The first of these stories relates how the bodhisattva was once the daughter of a Brahmin woman who dies and is consigned to the hells for offenses that she has committed in her lifetime. In an act of filial responsibility and respect, the daughter travels to the hells to rescue her mother from its horrors and subsequently vows to rescue all beings who suffer there. The rich descriptions of the kinds of karmic retribution and punishments that the dead suffer in the hells are reminiscent of the Christian hell in Dante’s Inferno. The Sixth Patriarch’s Dharma Jewel Platform Sutra Second Edition $30.00

“The knowledge and vision of the Buddha is just your own mind; there is no other Buddha.” Such is the teaching of Master Huineng (638–713), the most important and most revered figure in the Chan (Zen) School of East Asian Buddhism. Huineng left no written record, but his students compiled accounts of his public lectures and one-on-one exchanges, together with the dramatic story of his life. The resulting volume is The Sixth Patriarch's Dharma Jewel Platform Sutra, "sixth" because Master Huineng is counted as the sixth generation of patriarchal succession from the first Chan patriarch Bodhidharma. Master Huineng's Platform Sutra is so highly regarded in Buddhist Asia that it is called a Sutra, a term otherwise reserved for texts spoken by the Buddha himself Editors: Martin Verhoeven, PhD, University of Wisconsin- Madison Rev.
